The magistrate judge had issued the warrant first thing the next morning. By early afternoon, Lawson already had the account’s owner, Jason Morrison, in custody. The small interrogation room smelled faintly of disinfectant and stale coffee, its bare walls and cold fluorescent lighting giving it a sterile, unwelcoming feel. The metal table between them was scuffed and dented, a testament to countless tense interviews before this one.

The man was in his late thirties and had lived outside of Savannah all his life. So far, he hadn’t requested a lawyer, which Lawson was grateful for. She intended to get as much out of him as she could before that changed.

"Is it true your Instagram username is DarkWanderer87?" Lawson asked the suspect, her voice steady, her gaze fixed on him.

He sat with his arms crossed at the table, his posture defensive but his face calm. His long dark hair was pulled back in a ponytail, and the dim lighting cast shadows over his sharp features. A tattoo on the back of his hand—a wolf’s paw that made Lawson barely suppress an eyeroll—matched the one in the photo from the account, shoddy angle and all. Morrison remained silent, the faint creak of his chair the only response as he shifted his weight slightly.

"I have a few different accounts on social media," Jason responded.

Lawson pushed a pen and paper over to him. "Can you write them down for me?"

"I guess," he said with a shrug, picking up the pen and writing.

She was surprised at his cooperation, considering he was being questioned regarding the murder of a young woman. Then again, he didn't seem like the smartest member of society.

When he put the pen down, Lawson asked, "Did you know Ashley Gilford? Or is she someone you just followed online?"

"We met once or twice."

"What did you do when you met?"

"Look," Jason said, "I don't know nothing about that girl's murder. I swear it."

"Okay,” Lawson replied, shrugging a shoulder. “We're just trying to find out who does. And you knew her. That's why you’re here."

"She agreed to meet me when I messaged her," Jason said, eyes not quite meeting Lawson’s. "That's all."

Lawson nodded and decided to shift gears. "Do you go to the Blue Sky Preserve often?"

"Sometimes," Jason said, his voice a little more measured now.

"When's the last time that you were there?"

"Couldn't say. A while ago."

"You posted a picture of it online timestamped for last week."

"People post things after they do them."

"So if I asked to see your phone and looked through your photos, the timestamp on the original wouldn't be from last week then?"

Jason didn’t answer, instead sinking into his seat. His unease was palpable, but Lawson kept up the pressure.

"You wrote to Ashley and said you were glad she liked your gifts. What else did you buy her?"

"Just things she said she liked."

"How did you know what she liked?"

Jason shifted in his chair. "I may have watched her a bit."

"Online?"

"Yeah… and in other ways." He furrowed his brow. "Look, am I in trouble or something?"

"As I said, we're just here to ask a few questions.
